District Overview

The Newington Public Schools’ curriculum provides a comprehensive, diverse, and challenging array of rich learning experiences to meet the needs of all students. Based on state and national standards, the curriculum provides the framework for a student’s educational journey from kindergarten to grade 12. The district’s one-on-one technology initiative pairs students in kindergarten through grade 2 with iPads that remain in the classroom, while students in grades 3 through 12 are issued Chromebooks that can be taken home. Beginning in grade 5, every student is enrolled in the district’s science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) exploratory program, where students are exposed to engineering in a dynamic flexible environment. Beginning in grade 7, students who develop a strong interest in the STEM exploratory program may apply to one of two extended day STEM academies: biomedical sciences or aerospace and engineering. Newington High School is undergoing a $2.5 million renovation that will house the high school STEM academy programs. This renovation includes a genomics lab, health services lab, aerospace lab, art design lab, a commons area, and a 120-seat culinary and hospitality center. Students may also enroll in three academy-themed programs: information technology and digital innovations, business and finance, and culinary and hospitality. Highly motivated students may begin their college career while at Newington High School by taking up to two free courses per semester at Central Connecticut State University.

Hartford residents entering Pre-Kindergarten Age 4 through Grade 10 and living in Zone 3 may apply to attend this school.

School Report Card – the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) has prepared this report, which includes information about student enrollment, student achievement, student and teacher diversity, and much more.
